RCD CAP Project - 2010-2011 - Social Media Project

Explore what is social media, and what is education.  Next find out if there’s a correlation between the 2.  Do you think people with disability can benefit from social media in the present day education systems?

What is social media?

The social media is the media for turning communication into interaction by using the web-technologies. It is not like the traditional media, which can provide the one-way communication only.

Social media can provide the two-ways communication because some people can leave message, revise the posts, make votes and like the post instantly. For example, the blogs, the social networking website, and the wikis can be social media.

The comparison between traditional media and social media can be seen as the following table:

What is education?

In largest sense, the education is an act, which has development effect on the mind, character, values, knowledge, skills, personality and ability of a person.

Technically, the education is the process that teaches the knowledge, skills, and values from organization, school, and company.

For example, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Simon Fraser University and University of British Columbia are educations for schooling. Richmond Centre for Disability and Microsoft Corporation is an education for working.

The correlation between social media and education

After social media was founded in 1990s, the education was influenced slowly. Lastly, the social media is rapidly influencing everything in the education.

For example, the students in university can use the social media to discuss the courses and the students in high school can use the virtual classroom in social media to discuss the schoolwork and upload their homework.

Social media are influencing the teachers and instructors as well. The teachers and instructors can post the questions to let the students to discuss and mark the assignments online. If there is an urgent thing, for example, teachers are sick or the weather is bad, they can post the publication in social media to let the student know these things.

Do you think people with disability can benefit from social media in the present day education systems?

People with disability can benefit from social media in the present day education systems because of:

It can solve the communication problem (video-sharing can have closed captions for hearing impaired and blog can have words by words for communication impaired)

It is based of accessibility (social networking, wiki, and blogs can have big font for vision impaired)

It can help people with disability to practice something for class, especially mathematics, sciences and English. (Blogs and distance educations can provide discussion for the students with disability or without disability to practice the something or discuss the questions.)
