RCD CAP Project - 2012-2013 - Success Story

One day, my supervisor wanted me to reinstall the computer for a client, because I told him that I knew how to reinstall the computer. During reinstallation, I had the problems, such as the date/time is not correct and sound card problem.  I have asked him to replace the battery and for helping with sound card problem.

After that, he installed Office and I watched how to install it. After a day, He transferred the computer to a client. After a few days, I got his reply to a client with the carbon copy to me, it described, “Thank you Argon.” It was pleasure to assist the client and supervisor.

“Helping people is origin of happiness.”

RCD CAP Project - 2012-2013 - What is wrong with IP version 4 Address?

What is wrong with IP version 4 Address?

Argon Dai

The IP version 4 Address has the crisis, because it is only has the 2^32 addresses in total – around 4.29 billion. They have been all assigned to various institutes (university, internet service provider, etc.)

IP version 4 have not been running out, because many IP version 4 address are not used, and in the hands of the institutes like Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the company like International Business Machines.

More IP version 4 address are available to be assigned and more will be traded or sold, but they will be not enough to be assigned in the next two years.

The solution is IP version 6 addresses, which will replace the IP version 4 addresses. They will have 2^128 addresses in total – around 340,282,366,920,938,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, because they will have the hexadecimal.

RCD CAP Project - 2012-2013 - What is IL Philosophy?

What is IL Philosophy?

The independence living is a learning way for the life without the dependence for people with disability which use different way. It is also the rights of the people with disability and a looking way between the disability and society.

Otherwise, if there is no independence living in the countries, the people with disability in the countries will live difficultly. For example, in Taiwan, the government is giving New Taiwan Dollar 5000 (Canadian Dollar 166) for allowance of the one hearing aid, but in the international market of the hearing aid, the price is United States Dollars 1250. The people with hearing disability in Taiwan are hard to learn the independence living because the family have to buy the hearing aids for them. When some of people with the hearing disability in Taiwan are finding jobs, it is difficult to find them because the employers have to use the sign language with the people with the hearing disability. However, they do not have any time to use the sign language because they are always very rush.

The independence living philosophy is a basic condition that person with disabilities are the best experts on their needs and they must take the individually and collectively in designing better solutions. They also comprise the de-professionalization, self-representation, de-medicalization, de-institutionalization and cross-disability.

In the Independence Living Philosophy, the people with disability are seen as the citizens firstly and as the clients of the health care and social services secondarily. As the citizens in democratic society, they have the same as the rights and freedoms in their life and the life project are taken granted by other citizens as the independence living movement claims.

As the clients of health care and social services, the health care and social services must provide the assistive technology, rehabilitation services, and income assistance. For example, the government of British Columbia currently issues Canadian Dollars 900 as income assistance for each person with disability every month. Microsoft has built-in assistive technology in its products such as Windows and Office.

"Independent Living means that we demand the same choices and control in our every-day lives that our non-disabled brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends take for granted … We are profoundly ordinary people sharing the same need to feel included, recognized and loved." Dr. Adolf Ratzka.

RCD CAP Project - 2012-2013 - What RCD means to me

RCD means that a learning, flexibility and accessibility place to me. I will explain why these are to me later. I will explain that the RCD’s goals that are to encourage people with disability to be part in the community and to provide the information, resource, and support to make the people with disability to learn how to live independently.

Why RCD means a learning place to me? There are many interesting classes, like guitar class, mom’s yoga class, public speaking class, English class, martial arts class, exercise class, taichi class, computer class, and etc every week. These classes make the people with disabilities and without disabilities to have opportunity to learn them happily.

Why RCD means a accessibility place to me? It is due to there are many accessibility facilities at RCD, like there are an elevator to make the wheelchair user to go to upstairs easily, accessible washroom to make the user with disability to go to washroom easily and floor is accessible to everyone. Not only accessibility facilities, but there are also assistive technology to make the users to access the computer easily and happily, like JAWS, Dragon Speaking, Zoom Text. RCD CAP Project - 2011-2012 - Success Story

Success story 1

As I was notified that three youth interns will be hired in November, I thought Facebook is a good platform to interact with the CAP Coordinators and Youth Interns. Therefore, I already had prepared to establish the group for these people on Facebook. As they started working in November, I established the Facebook Group for seven people (Executive Director, two CAP Coordinators, and four CAP Youth Interns) to access only.

It is a success mode because these people can integrate the comments to let Executive Director know and CAP Coordinators and CAP Youth Interns can discuss the assignment and coordinate the CAP Youth Interns in that platform.

Success story 2

I assisted a client who was helped by the Career Development Facilitator to use the Career Cruising because I had an experience to use that website.

When she was sitting at CAP Computer, I pointed the screen to teach her how to go on the browser and the poster to tell her where it has the web address. When she entered that website, I pointed the poster to tell her to type username and password.

Career Development Facilitator said thanks for helping. I was grateful that my experience could help the client and reduce Career Development Facilitator’s pressure.
